I’m an NHS anaesthetist somewhere in the United Kingdom. I’ve been putting people to sleep for longer than I care to admit, and somehow they keep letting me do it.
This blog is where I write about the absurdities of modern medicine, the bureaucratic labyrinth of the NHS, the peculiar characters one meets in operating theatres, and occasionally something genuinely useful about anaesthesia.
Why “anaesthesiargh”?
Because that’s the sound you make when:
- The computer system crashes mid-operation
- Someone asks “but can’t you just give them a local?” for a six-hour procedure
- You discover the surgeon’s “quick laparoscopic case” has become open
- The coffee machine is broken again

All views expressed here are my own and do not represent those of my employer, the NHS, the Royal College of Anaesthetists, or anyone with any authority whatsoever. Patient details are fictionalised or composites. Any resemblance to actual surgeons, living or dead, is purely coincidental and probably their fault anyway.
